Very rare niello with gilt. I guess it was made in England. Extremely rare and beautiful fob, without any engravings. L” for maker, “anchor” for Birmingham, “lion passant” for sterling silver and “l for 1910. Wonderful workmanship in wonderful condition. Niello-this is the art of ornamenting metal surfaces that is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is an enamel-like substance made alloys of sulfur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metal, especially niello with gilding!
