Victorian Sterling Silver Niello Watch Chain w / fob. Niello is the art of ornamenting metal surfaces that is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is an enamel-like substance made alloys of sulfur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metal. This attractive chain from the Victorian (ca1880) era is a wonderful example of the Niello craft! Not marked but tested by a professional jeweler and meets a high silver sample. Dimensions: 70cm -27 1/2 INCHES LONG. 1inch = 2.54cm. Total wight aprox 33.38gms. It comes from a private collection, antique show in WIEN VIENNA AUSTRIA. Gorgeous striped niello oblong twist fancy link chain – every other link retains traces of rose gold plate – original niello striped swivel pocket watch clasp – large spring clasp is of the same period – but not niello (black and silver striped) – would make a unique statement necklace – measures 16 1/2″ long x 3/16″ wide – marked only 800 – weighs a nice 12.9 grams.
