Victorian Sterling Silver Niello Watch Chain w / fob. Niello is the art of ornamenting metal surfaces that is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is an enamel-like substance made alloys of sulfur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metal. This attractive chain from the Victorian (ca1880) era is a wonderful example of the Niello craft! Not marked but tested by a professional jeweler and meets a high silver sample. 19 c Niello Silver Morning Glory Figure Dresser Jewelry Trinket Casket Box Scene. Here we have a wonderful late 1800s Victorian Dresser Box. It is made of fine silver plate and signed on the bottom Simpson Hall & Miller. SHM was one of the premier silverplate makers in the 1800s and made exceptional pieces like this one. On the top there are beautiful Morning Glory flowers. Around the edges there is a gorgeous scene that wraps around the entire box. Elegant girls are picking apples and the detail is INCREDIBLE. Antique 19th Century Art Nouveau European Silver, 14K Gold & Niello Sword Brooch. This fantastic brooch was hand crafted in Central Europe around the end of the 19th Century during the Art Nouveau period and features a 800 silver oriental sword / dagger shape with 14K gold overlay and intricate Niello designs. The handle has the shape of a lion’s head. Niello is a black mixture, usually of sulphur, copper, silver, and lead, used as an inlay on engraved or etched silver. It is added as a powder or paste, then fired until it melts or at least softens, and flows or is pushed into the engraved lines in the metal. It hardens and blackens when cool, and the Niello on the flat surface is polished off to show the filled lines in black, contrasting with the polished silver around it.
