VERY FINE RARE c1842 RUSSIAN GILT SILVER NIELLO ENAMEL EAGLE FIGURAL COVERED CUP. A very fine and rarely found c1842 Russian 84 Solid Silver Gold Gilt & Niello Enamelled Covered Cup. One of the finer and earlier examples of Russian Niello work we have offered in some time. The cup is superbly handmade throughout with a rich gold gilding and intricate niello work that includes Russian Imperial eagles figures surrounding the body. The cup also has its original cover with matching period hallmarks. The cup has a dated hallmark created during the year 1842, along with the Moscow city hallmark and other makers marks, that are well worth looking into. This 1920s art deco, sterling silver, dance compact is just beautiful. The compact has a chased flower basket on the front side crowned with swags of garlands, and there is a border of chased leaves as a decorative border on the outer front edge. The basket, garlands and leaves are chased onto a black niello ground. The rich and thick sterling tassel is secured to the bottom of the compact with a niello-patterned, cone shaped cap. The sterling silver chain is in place and is original to the piece. The back of the compact shows three stylized initials all intertwined. I think they read: “BJR”. The compact is a solid, heavy weight for it’s size. This compact is double sided for rouge and powder. There is a clean mirror within each lid on each side.
