Victorian Solid silver Niello Watch Chain. Niello is the art of ornamenting metal surfaces that is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is an enamel-like substance made of alloys of sulphur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metal. This attractive chain from the Victorian (ca1880) era is a wonderful example of the Niello craft! Not marked but tested by a professional jeweler and meets a high silver sample. A Set of 6 Russian silver gilt & niello coffee spoons. Each spoon has a different building on the back, the twist handles are also niello. Spoons are 4.25 in length and are in great shape. Hallmarked but I can’t read it. Marked for “84” silver, which is. Would look nice polished. No noticeable flaws or damage. The best I can tell these were made in the 1880s.
