Beautiful Vintage Soviet Russian 875 Silver Niello Design Vodka Cup. A beautiful piece featuring masterfully chased floral ornaments and Niello decor. Niello is a black mixture, usually of sulphur, copper, silver, and lead, used as an inlay on engraved or etched silver. It is added as a powder or paste, then fired until it melts or at least softens, and flows or is pushed into the engraved lines in the metal. It hardens and blackens when cool, and the Niello on the flat surface is polished off to show the filled lines in black, contrasting with the polished silver around it. 2 1/4″ tall x 1 3/8″ in diameter at the top and weighs approx. Very good vintage condition with some patina and signs of wear according to age. Not monogrammed and covered in masterfully executed floral patterns.
