Caucasus Niello Napkin Ring Russian 84 Silver Mono IS. Antique Russian 84 Standard silver napkin ring, decorated with applied beaded borders and Niello patterns around the body. On the front, there is a shield cartouche, monogrammed “IS” in Cyrillic. Above the shield, there is a Niello inscription “Caucasus” in Old Russian. This catchy napkin ring is 1 3/4″ in diameter, 1 1/8″ tall and weighs 20.9 grams. Neillo Is a black mixture, usually of sulghur, copper, silver, and lead used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, especially silver. It is added as a powder or paste, then fired until it melts or at least softens, and flows or is pushed into the engraved lines in the metal. It hardens and blackens when cool, and the niello on the flat surface is polished off to show the filled lines in black, contrasting with the polished metal around it. It may also be used with other metalworking techniques to cover larger areas, as seen in the sky in the diptvch illustrated here. The metal where niello is to be placed is often roughened to provide a key. This Russian Imperial Niello 84 silver napkin ring is fully hallmarked. Imperial Russian Niello Silver napkin ring measures approximately 1.5″ x 1.5″ x 1.125 and is octagon shaped.
