Art Nouveau White Lotus design. Niello is a black mixture, usually of sulphur, copper, silver, and lead, used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, especially silver. It is added as a powder or paste, then fired until it melts or at least softens, and flows or is pushed into the engraved lines in the metal. It hardens and blackens when cool, and the niello on the flat surface is polished off to show the filled lines in black, contrasting with the polished metal around it. […]
Antique Russian silver Niello snuff box. This is a PRETTY and UNIQUE niello silver snuff box (tobacco box). ALL hand engraved and Niello technique, it is a technique of adding sulfur and other alloy to the engraved silver (like enamel). Marked on cover and base. I believe it is Moscow stamped, with 84 (silver purity). Maker’s mark ITS (Cyrillic)(see photo). Please see photos carefully to admire the beauty of the work. The last 2 photos show the 2 stamp mark (on cover and base). The photo number 10, shows a dent on one corner. H : 1 1/4 inches (3 cm). W : 3 1/4 inches (8 cm). D : 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm). Weight : 3.3 oz (96 grams). Dimensions and weight are approximately. Minor scratches consistent with age and use. A dent at one corner. Hinges are in working condition.
