ORIGINAL – Vintage Russian. Silver Niello Box Case. N amazing Antique Fine Russian Silver Niello Box Case, Moscow, 1878. GK, Gustav Gustavovich Klingert. Cover with troika scene, base with profuse scrolling foliage on stippled ground centred by monogrammed disc cartouche dated 1878; the case is marked on the inside edge with 84 for 875 purity silver, a city mark for Moscow, and a maker’s mark of GK for Gustav Klingert. The inside of the lid is also stamped with the city mark and the 84. Lovely addition to a box/case collector or as a gift. The factory produced table silver and also received special commissions, such as commemorative coronation dishes. Klingert’s works were awarded medals at various international exhibitions in London and Edinburgh (1886), Paris (1889, 1890), Chicago (1893), and Antwerp (1894). Also supplied the so-called “Russian enamel” items to the firm of Karl Faberge. In 1905 the factory was renamed as Klingert’s “Factory of gold and silver-ware” and was located at Klingert’s residence: until 1912 – in the Small Syromyatnicheskiy Lane, then – at the Elokhovskaya Square. Klingert was a prolific maker with pieces in major collections including the Kremlin Armory Museum and The State Historical Museum. Material: Solid 0.875 Silver (the gilt inside is washed).
